Tummy tuck recovery, week by week

A tummy tuck removes skin and often repairs the abdominal muscles, which makes the first two weeks more about posture and protecting the incision than about the result.

At a glance

After a tummy tuck, expect to walk slightly bent at the waist and sleep with your knees and back raised for about one to two weeks, to keep tension off the incision. Drains, if used, often stay in for one to two weeks. No lifting more than about 10 pounds or core exercise until your surgeon clears you, often six weeks or more. Many people return to desk work in two to three weeks.

Recovery timeline

Days 0–3

Bent posture, short walks

  • Tightness across the abdomen is strongest now.
  • Walk bent at the waist several times a day; it lowers clot risk.
  • Constipation is common with pain medication. Start a stool softener as directed.
Week 1–2

Drains and first visits

  • Drains are logged and removed when output is low enough.
  • You straighten gradually.
Weeks 2–6

Desk work, no lifting

  • Many return to desk work at two to three weeks.
  • No lifting over about 10 pounds, including children, and no core exercise until cleared.
Months 2–12

Swelling fades, scar matures

  • Lower-belly swelling and numbness can take months to settle.
  • Scars often look redder before they fade. Ask when to start scar care.

Posture and sleeping

  • Sleep on your back with your upper body raised and pillows under your knees, or in a recliner.
  • Get out of bed by rolling to your side and pushing up with your arms, not your abdominal muscles.
  • Combined with a BBL? The positions conflict. Ask your surgeon for a specific plan before surgery. BBL sleeping

Drains

Many, but not all, tummy tucks use drains. Empty and log them as taught, secure the bulbs, and ask in advance whether to take pain medication before removal. Drain care in detail

Binder or faja?

Some surgeons use an abdominal binder, others a faja, and some limit compression on the abdomen after a tummy tuck. This varies more than patients expect, so follow your surgeon's instruction rather than advice in a group. If the garment seems to make lower swelling worse or leaves deep creases, ask at follow-up. Fajas and foams

Incision and belly button: when to call

  • Skin near the incision or belly button turning dark, purple, gray or black
  • The incision opening, or draining pus or foul-smelling fluid
  • Spreading redness, warmth, or fever of 101°F or higher
  • A soft, fluid-feeling bulge above the incision (possible seroma) About seroma
  • One calf swollen and painful, or any shortness of breath (911)
Nicotine and tummy tucks

Nicotine narrows blood vessels and is a leading cause of wound breakdown and skin death after a tummy tuck. Stay nicotine-free before and after surgery for as long as your surgeon asks.

Common questions

How long do you walk hunched over after a tummy tuck?

Usually about one to two weeks, gradually straightening as the incision tension eases. Your surgeon will tell you how quickly to stand upright.

How do you sleep after a tummy tuck?

On your back with your upper body raised and pillows under your knees, so you are slightly bent at the waist. A recliner works for some patients. Side sleeping is usually reintroduced later.

Why is my lower belly still swollen weeks after a tummy tuck?

Lower-abdominal and pubic swelling often lasts weeks to months, because lymphatic drainage in that area is disrupted and gravity pulls fluid down. Report a new soft, sloshing bulge, which may be a seroma, or swelling that is hot, red or painful.

Is a spitting stitch normal after a tummy tuck?

Dissolvable stitches sometimes work their way to the surface as a small red bump or white tip along the incision. Your surgeon's office should look at it. Call promptly if there is spreading redness, warmth, pus, opening of the incision or fever.
